Yes, we grow organically in professional greenhouses using organic substrates and pest control.
Leaf'd Box plants are grown in a proprietary, organic substrate that was purposefully developed to allow for fast growing roots, optimal moisture retention, and great shipping ability. It's like soil, but better! The substrate is a mix of natural and organic peat (moss), coir (coconut fiber), a natural foaming binder agent, and probiotics. They are pH balanced, antimicrobial, and are perfect for giving your plants a jump start as they grow into your garden.
We give your plants a growing head start to ensure they are strong enough to ship and then thrive in your garden. The size varies depending on the type, but plants and roots are typically around 4-6" in total length and have been growing in our plant houses for around 4-8 weeks. This minimizes our carbon footprint while providing healthy plants that can grow quickly into full-size plants.
Once you receive your box, you can get started with planting! Be sure to harden your plants before putting them in the ground. You’ll need to water, manage pests, and harvest before your kids eat it all! Here's a helpful page to get started before your first box arrives.
We get a head-start for you and cut out 4-12 weeks of growing by sending you plantlings instead of seed. It typically takes about 4-8 more weeks until most items start producing edible fruit, so you should be able to harvest your produce around 1-2 months after you receive your box. We'll keep sending you the right items, at the right time, so you'll have new, delicious vegetables available to be harvested right when the previous ones are being finished.
To help your garden flourish at its full potential, we recommend adding some plant food for extra nourishment. Additionally, having pest control to keep away bugs and disease is always a good idea!

All of our plants ship in less than 2 days via FedEx, packaged in eco-friendly, recyclable trays that hold in root moisture while keeping your plants safe. We ship them the same day they’re packed to ensure they arrive at your door within two days, no matter where you are in the USA.
We ship the education kits, one time plant kits, and subscripiton boxes to the continental United States. We cannot ship to Alaska or Hawaii at this time. We hope to one day expand so everyone can be a part of the #EasiestGardenEver!

Great question! Depending on your region, we ship plants every Monday and Tuesday. States like FL, AZ, CA, can expect their orders to ship every week (various upon availability.) For example, if you order your plants on a Wednesday, expect them to ship in 5 days on the following Monday. How do I set up the timers with my hydroponic tower?
You will receive 2 different kinds of timers in your tower kit: a manual timer, and a Wi-Fi timer. You can use whatever timer(s) work for your family's needs.
Manual Timers: The manual timer you have received is a great option for your water pump for both outdoor and indoor growers. For outdoor tower users, the manual timer is best if your Wi-Fi timer is not in range of your Wi-Fi network.
Outdoor Direct Sun Water Timer:
Daytime: 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off daily
Nighttime: 15 minutes on, 120 minutes off daily.
Outdoor Indirect Sun & Cooler Temperatures Water Timer:
Daytime: 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off daily
Nighttime: 15 minutes on, 120 minutes off daily.
Indoor Tower Water Timer:
When lights are on: 15 minutes on, 45 minutes off daily
When lights are off: 15 minutes on, 120 minutes off.

How many plants will I receive in my hydroponic tower?
Indoor Tower growers receive 2 shipments of plants, 27 plants at a time. They receive 24 weeks of online video curriculum. After you have grown and harvested your first set of plants, your second set of plants will ship when you are ready to grow for the next season.
Outdoor Tower growers receive 3 shipments of plants, 27 plants at a time. They receive 36 weeks of online video curriculum. After you have grown and harvested your first set of plants, your second set of plants will ship when you are ready to grow for the next season. After you have grown and harvested your second set of plants, your third set of plants will ship.
Plants typically ship 1 week after your hydroponic tower has been delivered to give you enough time to set up your tower and be prepared for your plantlings. You will plant LIVE seedlings into your tower, these are the plants that will arrive in the mail.

How many people does one hydroponic tower feed?
We generally recommend one tower for a family of four, but every family is different in how many veggies they eat daily. If you're planning to start a Fall/Winter garden with shipments beginning on September 1st, here's what you'll get and how many:
Broccoli (2), Lettuce Red (2), Lettuce Green (2), Lettuce Freckle (2), Parsley (2), Bunching Onion (2), Arugula (2), Mustard (2), Spinach (2), Napa Cabbage (2), Broccolini (2), Celery (2), Cilantro (2), Kale (2), Bok Choy (2).
That's a total of 27 plants per shipment. Outdoor towers receive 3 sets of 27 plants, while indoor towers get 2 sets of 27 plants.
What is the grade of the materials the tower are made with? Is it food grade? BPA free?
The modular Hexbody sections are made of PC/ABS UV stabilized virgin plastic. The bucket and lid are made of virgin HDPE food grade plastic.
What is the average cost of the maintenance on your hydroponic towers?
Maintenance costs are minimal! If you keep your device clean and take good care of it, you shouldn't have to spend much on upkeep. The main part you might need to replace is the pump. We use the Sicee Syncra Silent 1.5, which costs around $60 to replace. However, it comes with a 3-year warranty, and if you register the device, you get an extra 2 years, totaling a 5-year warranty. With this coverage, you probably won't ever need to buy a new pump.

What is the average cost of nutrients?
Nutrients are included in the price of your tower. Your nutrients included will last you 2 grow cycles or more, this is about 5 months.

Can any seeds be used? What fruits/veggies are recommended?
Any seeds can be used, but that doesn't mean that every vegetable will flourish grown hydroponically. For instance, I have never personally grown zucchini squash in our hydroponic towers, but I have seen people online who have and they have been successful! If you want to grow squash and experiment with squash seeds, we totally encourage it and encourage learning and would love to hear how it goes!

Do you offer a warranty for your towers?
We offer a 12 month manufacturer's defect warranty on all parts, and 24 months on LED grow lights. The pump we use is the Sicee syncra silent 1.5 has a 3 year warranty plus a 2 year extra warranty if you register your device. So in total, you have a 5 year warranty (if you register your pump).

The plantlings have soil on them. Will this clog up my tower?
Nope! Our plantlings are grown in a soil substrate that is perfect for hydroponics and will not fall apart when wet. They will not clog up your pump. To plant, all you need to do is take the plantlings straight out of the box, put them in the grow cups, and place the grow cups on the tower!
I received my tower, where are my plants?
Your Tower and Timer Kit will arrive BEFORE your plants, so that you have time to assemble your tower and get it ready for your plantlings. If you do not have your plants yet, that's okay! Plants typically ship 1 week after your hydroponic tower has been delivered to give you enough time to set up your tower and be prepared for your plantlings. You will plant LIVE seedlings into your tower, these are the plants that will arrive in the mail.

I received a manual timer but no tower. Where is my tower?
Your timer kit will typically arrive BEFORE your tower and plants. Your tower ships as soon as possible when the towers are available. You can track your status by checking your email for shipping notifications and tracking numbers. If towers are not on backorder, it typically takes 7-13 days for towers to be delivered from the day you placed your order.
Plants will arrive 7 days after your tower has been delivered.
