We love our large veggie selection for the Summer Box! We have all brand new never - before - sent plants for the Summer 2023 box and can't wait to see your harvest. These varieties are diverse for all different types of recipes. From salads, roasted veggies, or delicious salsa, these plants will provide you with great additions to your kitchen. These plant types thrive in the sun, and can last for a whole growing season with proper maintenance.

The Plants

Lettuce

Romaine

Plant to Harvest: 30-60 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

This lettuce can be harvested as it grows. Remember to not harvest more than ⅓ of the plant at a time to avoid shock. Planting it deeper into the soil will give it more support and keep it healthy as it starts off..

Red Noodle Bean

Long Yard

Plant to Harvest: 35-70 days
Space Needed: 12-16 inches

Helpful Tip:

Red Noodle Yard Long Beans are brand new to Leaf’d boxes! These beans can grow up to 22” long, and are beautiful in deep red color. These beans are popular in Chinese cuisine, and have a subtle nutty flavor. Use them like you would use green beans in cooking. Harvest when they are 12” long for best flavor, and grow on a trellis since it is a vine.

Mini Pumpkin

Kandy Korn Plus

Plant to Harvest: 35-70 days
Space Needed: 12-16 inches

Helpful tip:

This pumpkin plant is perfect for a smaller space. Each plant can produce up to 12 small pumpkins that are about 3”x3”! Growing them in the Summer will allow them to be ready for Fall decorations. Plant these next to your beans, corn, or trellised vegetables.

Sugar Snap Pea

Sugar Daddy

Plant to Harvest: 30-60 days
Space Needed: 12-16 inches

Helpful Tip:

Our Sugar Daddy Peas are a kid favorite! With a crisp crunch and a sweet taste, these peas will be your family’s favorite garden-to-table snack this Fall season. Peas should be just about ready for harvest 3 weeks after the flowers appear. After those 3 weeks, pick and taste each day until they are just right. Once you taste what you like, harvest and enjoy!

Tomatillo

Toma Verde

Plant to Harvest: 40-60 days
Space Needed: 24-36 inches

Helpful tip:

Tomatillos are a new plant for our subscription boxes! They essentially grow just like tomatoes, they’re just spicier! Trellis your plant so that it grows upward and strong. Harvest when fruit is still firm, bright green, and filling the husk. Pick weekly.

Tomato

Saladette 

Plant to Harvest: 50-65 days
Space Needed: 24-36 inches

Helpful tip:

These tomatoes will grow to be a pear or oval shape. These tomatoes are great for canning, sauces, and salsa. When picking tomatoes, wait until they are red for the fruits to reach their maximum sweetness. If you see sunspots on your ripe tomatoes or cracking, pick them immediately. Trellis your tomatoes once they reach 6-8 inches of height to support the weight of the fruit on the branches.

Sweet Bell Pepper

Plant to harvest: 40-60 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful tip:

Staking your bell pepper plants is a good option to give it the support it needs. Bell peppers do best in full sun and warm weather. These plants will need a deep watering– one to two inches per week. Aphids and flea beetles love bell peppers, so be sure to check for pests often. Like jalapenos, use a sharp knife or shears to harvest the pepper to avoid damaging the plant.

Green Zucchini

Helpful tip:

Green Zucchini needs to be planted in full sun with well draining soil. Water your zucchini deep, and add mulch to keep moisture in the soil. Harvest your zucchini when they reach 6-8" in length for the best flavor.

Corn

Yellow

Plant to harvest: 55-65 days
Space Needed: 16-24  inches

Helpful tip:

This is a new plant we are sending in our subscription boxes! Plant corn in a block for best pollination and full kernel development. Harvest when kernels are full and milk. This can be indicated by the drying of ear silks. Corn is ready to eat 18-24 days after ear silks first show.

Eggplant

Black Beauty

Plant to harvest: 60-70 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful tip:

Eggplant is a new plant for our subscription boxes this year! These eggplants Black Beauty Variety) will grow up from 6-10 inches long. Grow in full sun and water often. This eggplant is perfect for eggplant parmesan or stuffed eggplant dishes.

Arugula

Plant to harvest: 35-40 days
Space it needs: 16-24 inches

Helpful tip:

Arugula grows quickly and adds a slight peppery taste to any sandwich or salad. It can be harvested as it grows. Do not harvest more than ⅓ of the plant to prevent shock (unless you want to harvest the entire plant). This plant needs plenty of sun and water.

Cucumber

Plant to Harvest: 40-55 days

Helpful Tip:

These cucumbers are a bush variety but they can also be trellised. Harvest your cucumbers when they are 6-8 inches in length. This will optimize the flavor and keep your plant producing more fruit.

Cantelope

Plant to Harvest: 60-80 days
Space Needed: 48 inches

Helpful Tip:

Each cantaloupe plant can produce from four to eight cantaloupes. The best way to grow cantaloupes is to make sure the leaves have good air circulation. When leaves are on the soil and do not have good air flow, they can be more prone to disease and pests. Harvest cantaloupe when the outside ring is a raised, textured webbing. Discoloration is normal with cantaloupe because where it lays as it is growing will be a different color. A green rind will indicate that the fruit is unripe, so wait until the rind becomes more golden for harvest.

Honeydew

Honey Blonde

Plant to Harvest: 71-80 days
Space Needed: 24-36 inches

Helpful Tip:

This is a new plant for our subscription boxes this year! This honeydew is not green, it’s actually a light orange color! Harvest this honeydew when the rind changes from the gray-green color to a yellow color. You will know your honeydew is ready when all you need to do is lightly tug it from the vine and it comes off easily.

Okra

Plant to Harvest: 35-45 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

Okra is a brand new plant we are sending in our subscription boxes! They need full sun, and the fruit needs to be 2-3 inches long for harvest. Use okra in soups, sauteed, and even fried!

Jalepeno

Plant to Harvest: 50-70 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

Jalapenos (and peppers in general) love full sun. They grow best in the warm weather, and love soil with good drainage. Something great about jalapenos is they generally resist most garden insect pests! To harvest your jalapenos, we recommend not pulling them directly from the plant, instead, use shears to harvest them. Pepper plants are delicate, so avoid damaging them as much as possible.

Squash

Butternut

Plant to Harvest: 80-100 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

Get ready for Fall with butternut squash! Growing now will allow you to kickoff Fall with butternut squash harvest in a few months. Our Waltham Butternut Squash delivers an excellent sweet and nutty flavor. Watch out for cucumber beetles, squash vine borers, and squash bugs early in the season. This squash should ripen as long as possible on the vine, but remember to harvest the fruit before frost. Cut squash from vines and leave the stem intact attached to the squash for the most successful short and long term storage

Squash

Scallop

Plant to Harvest: 40-55 days

Helpful Tip:

Scallop squash needs to be planted in full sun with well draining soil. Scallop squash is also called “Patty Pan Squash!” Consistently water your squash plant, and add mulch to keep moisture in the soil. Harvest scallop squash when they are 2-4” in diameter.

Large Pumpkin

20 Karat

Plant to Harvest: 75-100 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

This pumpkin will grow large, perfect for carving or eating. Fruits can grow up to 22 pounds, and these are a semi-bush variety. Water deeply and harvest when the handles appear dry. Cut the handles instead of ripping them from the vine.

Green Bean

Plant to Harvest: 35-50 days
Space Needed: 16-24 inches

Helpful Tip:

Harvest often to encourage fruiting and to make sure the beans stay fresh while on the vine. You can harvest these beans when they get to be 3-5” long. It is best to harvest beans in the morning to keep them sweet and delicious.

Mint

Plant to Harvest: 40-50 days
Space Needed: 18-24 nches

Helpful Tip:

Make sure to maintain your plant so that it does not overgrow. Planting mint in pots is a great way to control growth. Harvest mint as needed. The longer the mint is growing the larger and more flavorful the leaves will become. To harvest, pull from the outside to the inside.

Squash

Yellow Squash needs to be planted in full sun with well draining soil. Water your squash deep, and add mulch to keep moisture in the soil. Harvest your zucchini when they reach 6-8" in length for the best flavor.

Tomato

Fresh Market

Plant to Harvest: 45-70 days
Space Needed: 24-36 inches

Helpful Tip:

Fresh market tomatoes will ripen to a decent size without becoming too large or heavy for the plant. This variety is sweet, juicy, and full of flavor to add into your kitchen. You can either start your tomato plant by tying it loosely to a stake to provide support, or you can wait to trellis it once it reaches 6-8 inches in height.

Thai Basil

Plant to Harvest: 30 days
Space Needed: 12-16 inches

Helpful Tip:

Harvest ⅓ of the mature basil plant each month to encourage new plant growth.In extreme heat, basil will want to bolt. Prevent bolting by watering regularly and providing light shade on peak hours of heat during the day. Trim flowering stems one inch below the flower to avoid bolting and basil turning bitter.
