I got my first Leaf'd box around Feb 19th so I've had about a month of growing time at the time of this review. I used to start my own seedlings but it's been awhile since I had space to garden and this looked like a great and easy way to jump back in.
The box arrived with the plants packed securely, laying on their side, in plastic clamshell containers with labels on the lid. Some looked a little rough, especially the more tender leafy greens, but overall they did pretty well. All the seedlings have recovered and are growing well now. A couple of the plugs had more than one seedling and I was able to split some of these, which is nice. Some of the leafy greens are about big enough now that I can start and pick leaves off for a small salad.

I appreciate trying to reduce printed materials that get shipped, but it was a little awkward trying to scroll through the "zine" (a QR code/link is included in the box) to for information while planting. The labels and zine don't include any variety information, which is a bit disappointing to me. I do like their suggestion to cut out plant markers from the lid, though they could tweak the layout slightly to make it friendlier to do so.

The materials were less tailored and detailed than I expected based on the advertising, so maybe this will improve over time. The packet of carrot seeds that came with had pretty minimal information as well.
On the whole it's certainly much more expensive than starting your own/direct sowing seeds, but probably competitive when compared purchasing seedlings locally. I think I like to have more detail and part of the fun of gardening is picking out varieties that I want to grow, so I don't know if I would keep this up year around and ongoing.
If you're budget conscious, like more control over varieties, and have some experience (or want to try!) then I think you may better off going the DIY route. But if you have the cash and want an "instant" veggie garden, don't have time or energy (or missed the window) to start your own seeds, are trying to garden for the first time and don't have a clue where to begin - I think Leaf'd is pretty neat!

Hi Joy! Thanks so much for your comments! We’re so pleased to hear your garden is growing well and that you’re going to be able to start enjoying your own delicious homegrown veggies any day now that you’re a month in! So exciting!

And thanks for the recommendations. We’re always trying to find the balance of the right amount of information. We don’t want to drown people in info so they miss the most important parts, but we also want to give everyone the info they want. One way we’ve started doing this is by breaking up the info that we used to mail in the zine. Now we send it to you via text/ emails with the right info at the right times, along with video snippets to help you walk through each step. We hope this is really helpful!

And you’re totally correct— planning out your own veggie garden and starting it from seed is the cheapest way to go. What we’ve really focused on is offering the easiest way to give you a great veggie or herb garden without all the work of planning it out and starting it yourself. While there is the lack of choosing the color or shape of your tomato, you get the benefit of getting amazing varieties (selected from over 5000 that we’ve tested!) at the right times, for one great garden! Another cool thing is our One to One program, where we support one person with clean water for each subscriber— so for long as you’re enjoying fresh, delicious, homegrown Leaf’d veggies, someone in Honduras is getting access to clean water who otherwise wouldn’t. We’re super proud to be a part of something like this, and you can see more at leafdbox.com/one

Thanks again for being a wonderful part of the Leaf’d family, and we’re here to help if you ever have questions or need support. Hope you enjoy your delicious veggies!
