What's Coming Up?
Summer is in full bloom, and we hope you've been loving your garden us much as we've loved hearing about it!
As we're in the middle of the summer heat, it's hard to think of the cooler weather that will be coming up in a few months. But not to worry, we've already been busy planning your next Leaf'd Box for the Fall/ Overwinter season!
For the veggie boxes, we've selected and are planting types such as artichoke, cabbage, cauliflower, pea, kale, lettuce, broccoli, brussels sprouts, fennel, arugula, and others. For the herb box, we're planting types such as dill, cilantro, parsley, thyme, oregano, and peppermint. All of the varieties we're growing have been specifically developed, tested, and selected to perform well in your area over the fall season. Some of them can even overwinter and can carry into next year! The specific types and varieties will vary depending on your subscription selection and location, but we're really excited to be getting you some truly amazing varieties specifically developed for this coming season!
We've also been busy doing thousands of evaluations of new varieties for next summer. But what are types and varieties?
Types are like kinds of animals, and varieties are like breeds of that animal. For example:
Type: Dog Breed: Golden Retriever
Type: Tomato Variety: Red Master
Each plant type can have tens of thousands of varieties, just like there's many breeds of dogs. And just as breeds of dogs look and act differently, so varieties look and act differently.
This is why we plant varieties each season-- to make sure that we test them and only send the very best of the best. These varieties are naturally bred and selected, in a very similar way to how dog breeders breed dogs (no GMO's here!).
Take this photo as an example. On the left side of the photo you'll see a row of cabbage. There's about 5' sections for each variety. Do you notice how one of the sections on that row looks brown and as if it is dying? You might think that that's a bad thing, but it is actually because that variety is very early (fast). That means that from the day you plant the cabbage to the day you pick it is way sooner than the one above it which is still maturing. The fast variety is the type we'd send to you in the early spring box so that you can enjoy the first cabbages of the season much sooner than you otherwise would have if you planted a later (slower) variety.
These are the little behind the scene things that we pride ourselves with-- making sure we think of all the details and do as much of the heavy lifting behind the scenes as we can, all to create your #EasiestGardenEver.
As always, we love hearing from you! So please do share your thoughts and suggestions to us via social media or by reaching out to us at info@LeafdBox.com!
